His professional name "Jack Kirby" was possibly chosen in reference to Rollin Kirby (1875–1952), an influential political cartoonist who won three Pulitzer Prizes in the 1920s.Ī 14-year-old Kirby enrolled in Pratt Institute, a prestigious school for illustrators, but quit early. He cited among his main influences comic strip artists Milton Caniff (1907–1988), Hal Foster (1892–1982) and Alex Raymond (1909–1956), who were all pioneers of the adventure genre in comic strips. He was mostly self-taught as an artist, having started by studying newspaper artwork from comic strip artists and political cartoonists. He developed an interest in drawing at an early age. Kirby was born to Austrian Jewish immigrants. The advance for the book allowed Albom to pay Schwartz’s medical bills, but what was expected to be a modest publishing run turned into a phenomenon, as Tuesdays with Morrie spent 205 weeks on the bestseller list. Albom visited Schwartz multiple times in Boston, and wrote a book about the experience, Tuesdays with Morrie. Albom also wrote a number of sports books, but his big success occurred in 1995 when he learned that a professor of his from Brandeis, Morrie Schwartz, was dying of ALS. After Columbia, he worked his way up in sports journalism, winning prestigious awards from the Associated Press in 1985, and eventually landed as the lead sports columnist at the Detroit Free Press. In addition to that, this book’s plot seems to be pushed along by Colin being somewhat menacing towards the supposed former rake, and at least part of the attraction for the widowed Francesca towards Michael is because he was a rake and told her wicked stories of his seductions of other women, which seems to have eroded the sort of trust that one would expect. She wanted to create enough suspense to have a novel’s worth of material to work with, but in creating her plot she made two people who are rather ill-suited to each other and to a happy marriage because both of them are so prone to running away from their difficulties that it seems unlikely that they will be able to have a happy and stable marriage for all of their physical chemistry. ![]() Plot-wise, it is easy enough to see what the author was going for. This book manages to fall into a bit of uncanny valley in that it combines people who seem both incestuous as a couple as well as seeming to be too far apart emotionally to make a good couple. ![]() One of the things that makes this book unsatisfying is that it deals with two flight-prone people who, despite being good friends, are rather unsettling in their relationship with each other. The moody, murky ocean colors work for me, especially how the light is filtering down through the water.Īt the conclusion of the first novel, Alosa was reunited with her ship, the Ava-lee, and its crew. The vector-art is used to much better effect and the overall aesthetic more dynamic.
